ORS and Dehydration

Introduction

ORS — oral rehydration salts — is one of the most important medicines ever invented. In Ghana, diarrhoea is still one of the top causes of death for children under five. ORS reverses dehydration simply, cheaply, and at home.

This short guide covers the essentials. A more detailed version is in editorial review. For personal medical questions, talk to a pharmacist on WhatsApp.

What we cover

  • How to mix ORS correctly — one sachet dissolved in exactly 1 litre of clean water. Never less, never more
  • When to give it — any episode of diarrhoea, vomiting, or significant sweating (including heatstroke)
  • How much to give — for a child under 2: a quarter to half a cup after each loose stool; for older children and adults: a half to one cup per episode
  • Warning signs a child needs hospital care — sunken eyes, no tears when crying, no urine for 6+ hours, floppy or unresponsive, skin that doesn't bounce back when pinched
  • Zinc supplementation alongside ORS for children — current WHO guidance
  • Why every Ghanaian home should keep ORS

Diarrhoea rarely gives warning. By the time you can go to a pharmacy, a small child can be dangerously dehydrated. Keep 5–10 sachets in your medicine cabinet at all times.
